History of Osa Peninsula
In pre-Columbian times, the peninsula was inhabited by an indigenous group called the Bruncas, who settled about 45 kilometers from Punta Burica. After the conquest, the area was dedicated to gold mining and logging.
Mining activities ceased with the declaration of protected areas and the creation of the Corcovado National Park, putting an end to the gold rush in the area.
One of the most important towns on the peninsula, Puerto Jiménez, was a key location for development as it became a border town. It even had its own airstrip in 1938.
