In this article from #GentedelPacífico we tell you the mystical story of the sculptor Lito del Bosque, who at just five years old arrived in San Antonio of Tulin in 1956 and knew from the beginning that his passion was to create.

Tulin is between Jacó and Quepos, it is a town surrounded by nature, close to the beach and with a unique energy. Manuel Jimenez is known for his ‘dinosaurs’ and is called the ‘sculptor of prehistory’. For Lito, each tree hides a story and with his hands he brings them to life.

The beginning of a mystical path

Lito arrived in San Antonio de Tulin in 1956, not knowing what an experience would change his life forever. As a young man, this sculptor says that he fell madly in love with the impressive Morpho butterflies and dreamed of catching one.

The story begins when as a child while he was chasing butterflies in the forest, he went into a path and came to a large and leafy tree. When trying to reach the butterfly, from the bark of the tree, a luminous being ‘dressed in fine lace threads’ came off.

This mysterious figure approached Lito and revealed a secret: everything he saw was part of a story that could not be fully completed due to the shortness of human life, and Lito was chosen to complete the story.

Lito del Bosque: elements that come to life

The encounter with this luminous being awakened Lito’s passion for natural habitats and his path as a sculptor has been cyclical. For this artist, each natural element has a purpose; a life that he can help to reveal.

Lito has devoted himself to his passion with tireless effort, focused on the vision that life always has a mission. The earth has many stories to tell and thanks to artists like him, we can discover other ways of seeing the world.

Despite using wood as the main material for sculpting, Lito explains the importance of respecting and protecting the environment and for this reason, he never cuts down trees, but instead uses wood that has already completed its natural cycle and gives it a new life.

This Costa Rican artist draws the attention of both nationals and foreigners and his sculptures already reside in other parts of the world such as the United States, Spain, China, South Korea and more.

For me the forest is sacred, that’s why I work with fallen trees that have already fulfilled their useful life and that need to return to fulfill a new purpose.
