2024 Municipal elections in Costa Rica

On February 4, Costa Ricans from all cantons will go to the polls to elect 6,212 local authorities who serve in the 84 cantons of the national territory.

Here’s all the information you need to know about the municipal elections.

Costa Ricans over 18 years of age who are duly registered at the respective board may attend to vote.

You can check your voting center, canton and district by visiting the TSE website.

How to vote?

• First, you must show up at your assigned voting center. Once there, you must find your name on the ‘voters’ list’ placed outside the polling station. There you will find the “voter’s number” that corresponds to you.
• Hand in your ID card and communicate your voter number so that you can be placed on the registry. You will be asked for a signature on the Register stating your attendance.
• Remember that if you need support or accompany another person who requires it, you can request a magnifying glass, pictographic cards, Braille ballot templates, etc.
• When you are given the ballots, go to the voting station, marking the box of your choice with an “X”.
• Finally, fold the ballots one by one and deposit them in the respective boxes.
• Remember that voting is secret, so you should not share your ballot information with anyone inside or outside the voting center.

Will Costa Rican citizens living abroad be able to vote?

In the case of municipal elections, Costa Rican citizens living abroad are not allowed to vote.

Is it possible to vote with an expired identity card?

In fact, it is possible, as long as its expiration date on election day is no more than one year old. Remember that to vote, it is essential to show your ID, other documents such as driver’s license, passport or photocopies are not admitted.
