In Costa Rica we enjoy two climates; the dry and very sunny season and at the other end, the rainy and cold season. And for you to feel comfortable and safe at home despite the rains, we bring you these tips.

By following this guide you will see that the rainy season is not as bad as some believe, from May to November, the country is nourished by the rains, growing greener and fuller with life. But of course having some precautions never hurts.

No roof, no house

Caring for your roof is one of the factors that you cannot ignore in the period of heavy downpours. The maintenance of the roof includes checking that there are no holes that can cause the very overwhelming and famous leaks. Repairing them is a task that you can do on your own in non-severe cases. Although the most advisable thing, will always be to hire a professional you trust and even ask for advice in hardware stores.

It is recommended: (a) to make an inspection, (b) clean the leaking areas, (c) use a sealant and (d) paint the ceiling with waterproof paint if you like.

Just like the rest of the house, the roof should also be cleaned, not so regularly, but it is a good habit. Removing debris, leaves, etc, that accumulates over the months, will extend your roof’s utility life span.

Clean the rain downspouts

Having a rigorous maintenance here is very serious, you should make sure that they are made of strong and durable materials such as PVC. It is also good to install grilles that prevent obstruction by leaves and debris.

No more “crying” walls

Both the materials used for the outer side and the inside of the walls are important for this season. In the EPA guide you will see that they recommend using ceramic for the exterior, since it is resistant and at the same time aesthetically beautiful.

In general it is good to use a waterproofing or a varnish (in wooden houses), as well as special paints to prevent water seepage and mold due to moisture.

Emergency Kit

At any time of the year, a surprise may appear, but if you have prepared your special kit beforehand, you don’t have to worry. For your kit, you should have on hand: water-resistant lamps, first aid items (medicines, wipes, bandages), water, non-perishable food, etc.

Other advice

  • Spray your house once a year to avoid being visited by insects and other animals in the rainy season

  • Maintain order in your garden with well trimmed grass, so the soil does not get swampy

  • Protect your electrical appliances. When you notice an electrical fault, call a certified technician to reduce the chances of damage, material loss or physical accidents

If you take care of your house, your house will take care of you! Enjoy the rainy season, don’t let it become an unnecessary worry, but rather a time of relaxation and renewal, so that you have peace in the midst of the storm.
