The Ecological Blue Flag program is well known in the country, we have usually heard it being mentioned when referring to beaches, national parks and other communities, which have made significant efforts in favor of environmental care. For example, some municipalities, such as Tibás, have been awarded this recognition several times.

What is the Ecological Blue Flag?
Primarily, the purpose of the PBAE is to educate and promote the development of social organizations and communities, in harmony with living beings and respect for our ecosystems. Its objective is to mitigate the problems created by climate change and stimulate a culture that is aware of the protection and well-being of Costa Rican fauna and flora.
This project was founded 25 years ago by Dr. Darner Mora Alvarado, Director of the National Water Laboratory of the Costa Rican Institute of Aqueducts and Sewers (AyA). It is free, voluntary and recognized, both in Costa Rica and internationally. And it has the support of 16 public entities, including the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT), the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), the National Association for the Protection of Animals (ANPA), the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education Public (MEP), among many others.
This program goes beyond compliance with requirements, since it has as its transversal axis the environmental education and the improvement of the quality of life of the participants, through changes in attitude and aptitude towards our environment. It is a Life philosophy and lifestyle that seeks the well-being of society through actions that promote the rational and responsible use of natural resources.

Furthermore, the PBAE seeks to strengthen democracy, by giving the communities themselves the tools and the ability to make decisions that help the environment and adapt to their needs.
How to subscribe?
Now, the first step to enroll in the Ecological Blue Flag program is to enter the official site and identify the most suitable category for your property. The program has around 17 categories, including in the real estate sector:
- Agricultural or livestock farms
- Neighborhoods, condos and residential developments
- Residential houses and apartments, among others
Regarding this topic, it is important to note that depending on the selected category, the registration dates vary. When sending the respective documentation, stipulated in the procedure manual, an initial diagnosis is made.
Next, it is also important to define a local committee, made up of people who will ensure that the parameters of the category are met. Said committee shall prepare a report on the annual work plan and a final report, or evaluation. Where the correct compliance with the management parameters is evidenced.
Those projects that meet the requirements and have a commitment to the cause will be awarded and published annually.
