The term of quinta, arises in the sixteenth century, however since then its meaning has evolved. At first, it alluded to the percentage of land that the crown granted to the people to work in agriculture. These quintas provided sustenance, home and work to those who were granted, but not all had the same measure.
At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, the term of quinta migrated to our American territory. Given that colonization spread throughout the continent, the parcels of land to which this term is used are not the same in all Spanish-speaking countries. In some it refers to land destined for agricultural production while in others it refers to properties destined for vacation.
What is a quinta in Costa Rica?
The technical concept of quinta in our country is that of one hectare of land, that is 10,000 m2, a fifth equivalent to 2000 m2 is segregated, so that property owners can live and use this space in a recreational way.
Over time it was no longer necessary to maintain the exact measurement of 2000 m2 since it is no longer a segregated portion of land, but it became what we know today. A piece land, where people enjoy time with family or friends recreationally.
This definition of quintas was established in the middle of the last century. Before the hotel industry and the tourism market were the trend that we know today.
We are talking abut economic diversification, since there were people capable of buying villas and maintaining them with all the cost that this entails, while other people chose to travel to hotels and make small investments for weekends paying temporary stay.
With this, the quintas suffered a drop, it could even be said that they “went out of style”. And people stopped investing in this model to invest in tourist vacations in hotels, airbnbs, cabins and so on.
Quintas are back…
By little we are recovering our “normality”. For this reason, people have currently chosen to return to the model of villas for recreation. People prefer to spend their free time with their family in safe places than to return to the hotel tourism model.
And it’s all a matter of taste. In the end it is more important to spend time with our loved ones regardless of where it is. However, if you are considering investing in a property that allows you to be surrounded by nature in a remote place and with space to share, do not hesitate to do so.
Many of the benefits of investing in a farm start from having your own space to even an opportunity to make money. Currently, a quinta can be maintained by placing the property on rental platforms (such as airbnb) and generating extra income.
This beautiful farm is located in San Rafael de Esparza, a few minutes from San Mateo at one end, and from Puntarenas in the opposite direction. The property of more than 7000 m2, has a wide frontage of 72 m on public street and has all the services already installed and in operation.
Its topography is quite pleasant, mostly flat and with a very slight slope on one of its lateral sides, which makes it ideal for water to evacuate the property easily during the rains.
If you are from warm areas such as Alajuela, Grecia or surroundings, you can look to invest in areas with more cold weather such as Cartago or the remote parts of Heredia. There are options for every taste.
Being able to invest in a quinta will change your life for the better. Remember that this property model is on the rise again, so making the decision to have a quinta can be beneficial even for your pocket.
